The story behind the transporter's creation is a blending of pride, passion and practicality. Before the First World War, Mercedes Benz had been involved in a fierce rivalry with the other German racing groups. But when Mercedes came out with the W-154 that was powered by the V-12, it won 12 out of 17 events trailing up to the war, and was the unambiguous victor. Resulting from a decision that was taken in 1952, Mercedes came back to the game of Grand Prix racing in the season of 1954.

To announce its return, Benz chose to design a special haulier that will carry its all-new W-196 racer, a racing model that had a famous Argentinean racer as its pilot. Mercedes was keen on making the transporter unique, and also that it should be seen as being a Mercedes produce without difficulty. They also wanted it to be the one of the fastest vehicles on the roads of Western Europe.

To be one of the first to reach the racetracks meant that you got more time to rehearse and organize. This even meant that any damaged racer could be sent to the plants if needed and then brought back to the tracks in time. But the most remarkable thing was the transporter's body work. The steel panels on it were clearly inspired from other panels of the times. The 180 S served as the template for the doors, the interiors fixtures, and the windshield. Between its two fenders, the one up front and the one in the rear, there was enough space for two spare tires, loading ramps, tools and all the equipment for the racer.

Although the cab was well beyond the front axle, and was too low, this only added to the daring, and revolutionary looked that spoke of the Mercedes Benz craftwork. In fact, at times, it attracted more crowds than the racing cars that it actually carried. Mercedes Benz withdrew from racing following the tragic events of the 1955 French 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race after a privately entered Mercedes Benz 300 SLR crashed, killing 80 people. Although plans were made to place the vehicle and its precious cargo in the company's museum, its weight proved too much for the building's floors and the idea, as well as the transporter itself, was scrapped. In the light of frequent inquiries and requests, Mercedes Benz had to start designing a replica of it in 1993. Using an outside fabricator and working only from a few sketches and photographs the vehicle was finally completed in 2000.
