Stainless Imperial

Why does my silver plated spoon not look like silver?
Hi,
I have recently purchased a second hand silver plated spoon, but it does not look like my other silver plate items. The metal is very smooth and a completely different colour to the silver. Instead of a yellowy hue of silver, it is coloured more like stainless steel. On the back it has A Phoenix Product, AL, Imperial, 6DWTS.
Does anyone know why it looks and feels the way it does or if it isn't actually a silver plate spoon?
Thank You
Silver and silverplate can vary in purity. For example, 'Sterling' is about 92% silver. Your piece may be from Imperial (Australia) -- produced items with 82% silver, 18% nickel. That could explain the color. Do an Internet search using all elements of that engraving, plus the word 'silverplate'. Also, check an online encyclopedia of silver marks to be sure of the item's source, etc.
