A Flexible Supply Chain Gets A Distribution Center Upgrade

Although the Christopher & Banks 200,000 square foot distribution center had been successfully supporting its stores with quick fulfillment, the expenses for the transportation were cost prohibitive. Additionally, there was a strong desire to reduce transportation costs by repacking items to increase box weight. The aging equipment and current capacity were stained by the drive to repack large portions of merchandise. The facility's operations relied on an old and inflexible conveyor system where many chronic maintenance and operational challenges came from. Conveyor and material handling systems are also utilized frequently in airports and freight handling businesses.

With the combined difficulties of an inefficient workflow, a paper picking system, and aging equipment, the company decided that in order to continue supporting just in-time delivery and direct to consumer fulfillment operations, upgrades were necessary. Christopher & Banks hired the services of a material handling consulting firm, but they put the project on hold until Mike Tripp, the new manager for supply chain and logistics joined the team. Tripp arrived with the knowledge and experience to create a plan for a more productive, ergonomically sound and energy efficient solution that met throughput and budget constraints. There are also pick to light conveyor systems that use color codes to distinguish different types of materials from each other.

The project was put out for competitive bids and the contract was awarded to Intelligrated in April 2009. The proposal was cost-effective, it offered productivity gains for less than half the cost of the other proposals, it was then placed on a fast paced schedule to be completed on August 2009, before store deliveries for fall began.

The retrofit of the Christopher & Banks facility is built for a new linear flow with a semi automated fulfillment process. Merchandise is inspected and the quality is checked in receiving areas, then delivered by forklift to staging areas. Operators use RF-scanning to upload the information of the new merchandise into the pick-to-light system, where product is placed into ergonomically designed combination shelf and conveyor support assemblies. The workers at the distribution center add items to master cartons as they move along the Intelligrated gravity conveyor. The semi-automated fulfillment process is a representation of improvements over the old system, removal of manual lifting and clutter on the floor and giving a safer, quieter solution that is more accurate and quicker.

When the orders are finished for individual stores, the cartons are moved onto a main take-away conveyor belt to a two-level Intelligrated motor driven roller, or MDR, conveyor collection line. With features like zero pressure accumulation and run on demand independent zones, the conveyor decreases energy use and wear, removes product jams and allows the filling of the whole length of the conveyor. This lets orders be picked up to go on independently of shipping activity. Cartons move to a cental merge and sorter and then get routed to a any of three shipping lanes. On each lane, the cartons are sealed automatically, weighed, labeled at a work station, and moved by conveyor belt directly into a trailer at the doors of the shipping dock.

Some of the facility's upgrades include a convenient overhead empty carton conveyor given by Intelligrated. The facility makes up to 4 tons of empty corrugate on a daily basis, the reworked line for empty cartons moves the empty corrugate directly into a container waiting outside that is then sent out to be recycled.

Can you use a timing chain instead of a roller chain on a go kart?

If it'll fit and you have the correct size gears for it, why not. Seems a bit small though. That's the beauty of a go kart though, you make it work and it's ingenious

Hyundai launches new sedan in UAE (AME )

Juma Al Majid, the exclusive distributor of Hyundai Motors in the UAE, has
unveiled the new Azera in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. The premium large Azera has a
wide panorama sunroof, Nappa leather seats, front seat cooler and ventilated
seats, suede interior, smart key and an electronic parking brake. It is
equipped with a six-cylinder, 3.0-liter engine built on an all-aluminium body,
which minimises weight and utilises a roller chain drive system that
significantly reduces engine noise levels.
