How to install a timer instead of a wall switch, requiring neutral connection?
I have a plate with 3 wall switches. One controls the light in the hall, the second one controls the outside lights (porch) and the last one controls other outdoor lights. there are 4 cables coming into the box, each with white, black, ground. The four white wires are bunched together; there is a black wire going into each of the three switches (on the top screws) and there are wires (bottom screws) linking all three switches together. How would I connect two timers that have black, white, ground and RED?
I presume you want to time your outside lights only! Now you must leave the switches where they are. You will mount your two timers where you want them..the nearer the switch the easier it will be for you...From the white wires that is bunched together you must bring a wire to each clock or just bring to one clock and from that clock to the other clock...This is the Neutral wire needed to operate the Clocks. (WHITE)
Then you will bring a wire from the links in the switches (bottom) to the clocks same as before. This is the permanent live, it goes into connection LIVE at clock black I presume, loop to other clock.
Then from each switch bring another cable from top in with the black cables, bring one switch to one clock and the other switch to other clock..(TWO SEPERATE CABLES) these are the cables feeding your lights. Then bring Earth also...
If you bore a hole at an angle into the top of your switch back box... And run a five core cable 1.5 sq to your clocks it will cover all the cores and it will be neat, if you mount your timers just above your switches.. I think the cores from your lights goes to red in clock.
SO.... permanent live to clock...link to other clock.... Black
Permanent neutral to clock....link to other clock..(White)
A seperate wire from each switch (TOP) to Red in each clock...
Leave the wires in the switches as they were and leave switches there.
This will give you dual control..With switches off, clock will control...but you can still switch on your lights with switches, any time you want...
