Galvanised Steel Gate
How do I make a wooden gate, and how do I attach it to steel posts?

We are in the midst of building a wooden fence with galvanized steel posts instead of wooden posts. We have no idea how to build a gate for it. And it has been really hard to find anything on the internet showing/explaining how to build a gate if you are attaching it to steel posts. I bought a gate hardware kit and that doesn't even have instructions! How do I do this? Or where should I start?

the gate can be built and hung the same as any other using fencing palins to form the front of the gate to match in with the fence. Usually a fence consists of posts (100 x 100mm - 100 x 150mm timbers sunk in the ground) rails (approx 65 x 35 mm timbers fixed top middle and bottom to posts) and palins ( approx 15 x 150mm fixed to rails to form fence. decide how big you want your gate to be usually mach it with your fence height and make the width approx 15mm smaller than the opening to allow clearance. Then work out how many palins you will need for the gate when keeping the gaps between them the same as the fence. you will probably need to rip a palin down to get your size right if so put the rip in the middle of the gate. Now take a length of rail and cut three pieces 50mm shorter than the width of the gate so they are 25mm in from each end and place them on a flat surface at the same distance apart as the rails on your fence, and have the palins sit to match the fence too so it will look uniform when hung. it would be a good idea to lie it on a sheet of plywood or the likes with a square edge which you can square your gate off, well worth the effort of getting square at this point or it wont sit right in situation. Put 2 screws through each palin when happy with positions and being square. Then turn over and take a length of rail and lie it at a angle from edge of your bottom rail pointing up towards the opposite edge of your middle rail, its important this timber points up towards the closing side of the gate and not the hanging side. mark the timber to be cut within the 2 rails then cut and fit in position and tack in place, repeat this process between the middle and top rail then turn over and fix through the palins. screw 3 T bands to the 3 rails with the nuckle's of the hinges hanging over th hanging side to be attached to your post. Line the gate up with your fence and fix using (hilti) self tapping tech screws which are put in using a good heavy duty battery drill and will fix the gate solid without pre drilling. any other hardware will fix to the posts in the same way, I would also fix a rip of palin to the post the thickness of the gate back to close gate on too.I could have nocked it up the time this has took to type haha!
