Can Canyon Man Keep Up His Fight Against Technology?
By now, most everybody understands that modernity is here to stay and there's no going back. Modern technologies are everywhere one cares to look, and it's even been rumored that the Amish are going to be putting their horses in the latest footgear that's designed to get more than 50 miles per bag of oats out of them. There's no escaping technology, it seems.
All kidding aside about the Amish, it's still a fact that there's one guy running around -- who last updated his wardrobe when Dick Clark was a swinging young man fresh from Philadelphia -- around the neighborhood. Call him 'Canyon Man, ' and make sure to also call him a mechanic to help him repair the 40-year-old heap in front of his house he refuses to part with, even to the point of wanting to be buried in it.
Now why Mr. Canyon Man is still sporting a leather watch band that probably came off the back of some poor animal who didn't quite live up to expectations back in 1902 is a definite question for the ages, but the fact is he's out there supporting it and will never consider what futurists refer to as 'digital watches' and what most people refer to as just a 'watch' nowadays.
This man is also completely horrified by the thought of looking at any sort of television that doesn't come wrapped in a huge wooden console that probably was made from the oak timbers of a Revolutionary war-era sailing ship that once carried John Paul Jones around, with an equally elderly picture tube, to boot. It's kind of disquieting to think of this, though it's also very true.
No, something like a custom LCD (liquid crystal display, for those out there equally as technologically-challenged as Canyon Man is) for a television will never feature in his theater of the mind. In fact, that's probably a good chance that the words 'videocassette recorder' would be just as alien to him as 'digital video disc' also is.
What will Canyon Man do when he realizes that the television he owns can no longer pick up signals without the benefit of something called a 'digital converter box?' He may just pass out after hearing the words 'digital converter box, ' in fact. He probably would also suffer a fatal cardiac event if he heard 'liquid crystal display' and how it's lit through means of LED backlight technologies. It'll be just too much for him and his brain, unfortunately.
The question, then about whether or not modern technology will overwhelm the Canyon Man is an important one, if not for him than for the rest of us who have to put up with him and his obstinate refusal to get out of those disco bellbottoms and get with the real world. The blue smoke from the car is bad enough, but the wide-collared shirts and leisure suits are going to need to go.
