Would this be a good rat cage?

or is it too big or something?? I have a home made cabinet style cage for my female rats, and its pretty costy doing it again for my boys so i thought i'd buy one. Does it look safe enough?
hey silo i have 5 girls atm and 2 boys but getting some more soon, they are in the same room and have been for months and no problems but thanks for reminding me about bumble foot, ill probably remove the cage flooring, im also feeling like this cage would be lesser pain to clean compared to my cupboard cage. thats why i like it so much heh
hey rare yeah id never use cedar, i have used it a few years ago and lost rats to myco
I think that's a lovely cage! However, I would widen the platforms. They make simple wooden platforms that you can easily add to the cage via screws, that cost about $10 each. Just to give them more space to crowd together. The males love that.
There are a few things you should take into consideration.
1. The cage is wire, and this can cause damage to your rats' sensitive feet. Put something down over the wire for them to walk on to make it a little easier.
2. Do not put the boys and girls in the same room. When the boys smell the girls, they will go mental and possibly do damage to each other or to you! This doesn't always happen. Some people have been known to keep males and females in the same room without a single mishap, but I follow the motto 'better safe than sorry'. Of course, if you plan on getting your boys fixed, this won't be an issue.
3. How many rats do you have? I'd probably put up to four boys in that cage, but because there just isn't much platform or walking space, I'd be a little concerned to put a few more in.
Other than that, I think the cage is perfect. Of course, us dedicated ratty lovers all know that the only way to get the best possible rat cage is to build it yourself. But barring that, the bigger the better.
